Handmade Luxury Candles - Troubleshooting Guide
At Aroma Bay, we take pride in crafting luxury handmade candles with premium, toxin-free waxes, for a clean and sophisticated burn. To ensure you get the best experience from your candle, here are some troubleshooting tips and care instructions. Common Candle Issues & How to Fix Them:
1. My candle is smoking or has a tall, flickering flame.
✔ Solution: Trim the wick!
- A long wick causes excessive smoke and flickering.
- Before each burn, trim the wick to 5mm (1/4 inch) to ensure a steady, clean flame.
2. My candle has tunnelling (wax isn't melting to the edges).
✔ Solution: Let it burn longer!
- Your first burn is the most important – always allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges before extinguishing (this can take 3-4 hours, depending on the candle size).
- If tunnelling has already happened, try the foil trick: Wrap the top of the jar in aluminium foil (leaving a wide opening for the flame) and let it burn until the wax pool evens out.
3. My candle is burning unevenly.
✔ Solution: Check for drafts!
- Keep your candle away from wide open windows, fans, or air vents, as drafts can cause uneven burning and excessive flickering.
- Rotate the candle occasionally to help it burn evenly.
4. My candle isn't throwing much fragrance.
✔ Solution: Let it burn longer or move it to a smaller room.
- Aroma Bay candles are made with luxuryfragrance oils designed for a strong scent throw, but some scents take longer to develop.
- Let your candle burn for at least 2 hours before expecting full fragrance diffusion.
- Try placing the candle in a space (e.g., a bedroom or bathroom) for a more intense scent. Also, each candle fragrance is made for different sized rooms – check this information on our site.
5. My candle has a black rim or sooty residue on the jar.
✔ Solution: Trim the wick & clean the jar.
- Black residue is usually caused by a wick that’s too long.
- Trim it to 5mm (1/4 inch) before relighting.
- Use a damp cloth or paper towel to wipe off any soot on the jar.
6. My candle wax has small cracks or an uneven top after cooling.
✔ Solution: This is natural with soy & coconut wax!
- Since we use natural, toxin-free wax, some candles may develop small imperfections as they cool – this won’t affect the burn or scent.
- Simply light the candle, and the top will smooth out again as it melts.
Quick Candle Safety Tips
✔ Always trim the wick to 5mm (1/4 inch) before each burn. ✔ Let the wax pool reach the edges on the first burn to avoid tunnelling. ✔ Burn for at least 3 hours, but no more than 5 hours at a time. ✔ Keep away from drafts, pets, children, and flammable materials. ✔ Extinguish with a snuffer instead of blowing it out to reduce smoke. ✔ Stop burning when 1cm of wax remains to prevent overheating the jar.
